Not long ago, the main career path through the tough streets of
Chicago's asphalt-hard Southeast Side led to a blast furnace at a
steel mill.
Today, with many of those mills shut down, too many young men
find themselves routed into unemployment, low-paying service jobs and
frequently drugs.
But Chris Zorich, a son of the Southeast Side, broke the mold,
having escaped to Notre Dame on a football scholarship.
And believe this: He's having a ball. Better yet, he's still
down-to-earth, no prima donna.
This week, the 6-1, 268-pound nose tackle who played linebacker
at Chicago Vocational in the footsteps of Dick Butkus, was named one
of five finalists for the Lombardi Award, presented ...
