Penn State, which cannot begin playing Big Ten basketball
opponents for about two more seasons, may have to spend one season as
an independent after being urged to leave the Atlantic 10.
Following a conference call Wednesday involving the athletic
directors of nine of the 10 schools, Atlantic 10 commissioner Ron
Bertovich wrote a letter requesting Penn State leave the league by
June 30, The Pittsburgh Press reported Thursday.
Penn State, which announced Tuesday it will join the Big Ten,
declined to participate.
Bertovich said he did not like the Nittany Lions' lame duck
status because he currently is negotiating television contracts.
