Q. I just received my new baby boy's birth certificate.
Enclosed with it was a reminder to apply for a Social Security number
for him. Is this a joke? Why does he need a Social Security number?
I don't think he'll be working in the near future.
A. This is not a joke. Your son will need a Social Security
number by the time he's 2 years old, so you might as well get it now.
One recent change to the 1986 tax reform legislation that has
not been much publicized is the requirement that all dependents age 2
and older have Social Security numbers to be claimed as deductions.
(The original 1986 tax law required the card at age 5.)
