Article: Rotary Club rushes to reclaim lost Eastern Europe territory

Democracy is not the only thing on the move in Eastern Europe -
the Rotary Club is, too.
Evanston-based Rotary Club International marched into Budapest,
Hungary, and Warsaw, Poland, recently, establishing its first
chapters in these Eastern European nations since World War II.
Next stop: the Soviet Union.
"Rotary was evicted from 21 countries as a result of the
communist ideological revolution," said Hugh M. Archer, president of
the Rotary Club and chairman of Spiratex Co. "We're going back now."
Archer asked Soviet leaders last month to allow a Rotary Club,
and they're considering his request. He made the move because Soviet
citizens for years have been seeking a Rotary branch.
