BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Somewhere in the rain forests and farmland of
West Africa are clues to the deepest, most lethal secrets of the AIDS
virus.
A research team from the University of Alabama at Birmingham is
hoping these genetic hints can help tame the virus' killing power.
A small vial of blood taken from a West African prostitute held
one of the most surprising and significant clues. Last year, the UAB
researchers reported finding a new strain of the acquired immune
deficiency syndrome virus that, unlike its more potent viral cousins,
doesn't kill the cells it infects.
