In 1981, Mike Balkin was the No. 1 singles player on
Northwestern's tennis team, ranked among the top 15 college players
in America and played matches with such stars as John McEnroe, Ken
Flach and Robert Seguso.
This weekend, he will team with John Embree, who once played on
the pro tennis circuit. But Balkin and Embree won't be playing
tennis; they're among a growing number of ex-netters competing in
the National Platform Tennis Championships, which this weekend will
take place in the Chicago area for the first time in the event's
55-year history.
