LAS VEGAS The pleasure principle, pure and simple, propels Las
Vegas. "Live it up" is the credo emblazoned in neon across America's
foremost fantasyland of around-the-clock fun. The only deadly sin
here, it seems, is failing to have a good time 24 hours a day.
Explaining why Las Vegas was her favorite vacation spot, a
Chicago Sun-Times reader once captured precisely the laughing-gas
atmosphere of Nevada's casino capital. "I can forget the value of
money for a while," she wrote. "When I'm gambling, $50 is like $1,
and $1,000 is like $1. No matter what I have, it means nothing."
