Goalie Chris Ruzas stopped 38 shots to carry Mount Carmel for
three periods and Mario Dicaro scored the game-winning goal in
overtime to defeat Loyola 2-1 for the Amateur Hockey Association of
Illinois Class AAA state championship Sunday before a crowd of 5,147
at the Stadium.
Ruzas (2.10 goals-against average) was named MVP for his
performance that included two saves in the slot at the end of
regulation. The victory gave six-time Catholic League champion Mount
Carmel (33-6-1) its fifth title since 1979 and fourth in five years.
Metro League champion Loyola (34-10-5) outskated and outshot
Mount Carmel 39-18 and goalie Brian Meehan was impressive.
