Article: Lord Rothschild, 79; famed head of wealthy banking family in U.K.

LONDON Lord Rothschild, a scientist and member of the famous banking family linked to one of Britain's most controversial spy scandals, died Tuesday. He was 79.

His wife said in a statement released Wednesday, "The funeral will be entirely private. The family expects there will be a memorial service later." She did not reveal the cause of death or give any other details. Rothschild's secretary refused to say whether he had been ill or where he died.

Nathaniel Mayer Victor Rothschild, the third Baron Rothschild, belonged to the famous family of German-Jewish coin collectors who founded a banking dynasty.
