Article: New drug could aid `bubble babies'

WASHINGTON - The government Friday approved a new drug that could benefit an estimated 16 children born each year who now must spend their short lives inside a plastic bubble because they lack natural defenses against disease.

The new drug is intended to help so-called "bubble babies" who are confined to germ-free plastic tents because they suffer from a rare genetic disorder that leaves them powerless against such common childhood diseases as chicken pox and pneumonia.
