Article: Caretaker? Cozad whips Whitman into '90s shape

Whitman Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer James W. Cozad is taking the company back to the future.

Last November, when Whitman's board of directors selected Cozad, 62, to replace the late Karl D. Bays, some industry observers expected Cozad to do little more then warm the seat for Miles L. Marsh, the company's 42-year-old president and chief operating officer.

But with just three months under his belt as the company's top guy, Cozad is making his presence felt at the $3.9 billion mostly food and beverage company.

Last week, Whitman's board approved a Cozad plan to study the sale of one of its operating units and its real estate holdings in Chicago, New Orleans and Florida. ...
