LOS ANGELES "Driving Miss Daisy," a film that filled the hearts
of its viewers with feelings good and warm, won the Oscar for best
picture here Monday at the 62nd annual Academy Awards. And its
80-year-old star, Jessica Tandy, won as the year's best actress.
But "Daisy" did not win the across-the-board sweep that had
been predicted. Tandy's co-star, Morgan Freeman, lost in the best
actor category to British actor Daniel Day-Lewis for "My Left Foot."
Day-Lewis upset a strong field led by Freeman and Tom Cruise to win
the acting award.
For the second year in a row, the Academy voted for an actor
playing a character with a disability. Last year, the Oscar went to
Dustin Hoffman as ...
