Halston, who started his fashion career in the basement of
Chicago's Ambassador Hotel and went on to become one of the country's
most influential designers, died Monday night in San Francisco at age
57.
According to his brother, Robert Frowick, the 57-year-old
designer died after a 1 1/2-year battle against AIDS and an
AIDS-related cancer, Kaposi's sarcoma.
The designer died in his sleep at 11:21 p.m. at Pacific
Presbyterian Hospital, according to a hospital spokesman.
Born Roy Halston Frowick in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1932, Halston
first gained fame as a milliner, creating such style landmarks as
Jacqueline Kennedy's pillbox hats. He went on to design elegant,
