Article: Mell seeks spray-paint ban to stem graffiti

Arguing that "one degenerate with spray paint can ruin a neighborhood," an alderman Wednesday proposed a ban on the sale of spray paint to combat graffiti, and Mayor Daley endorsed the idea.

The mayor said he "would support" the proposal by Ald. Richard F. Mell (33rd) to make Chicago the only city in the nation to ban the sale of spray paint and markers three-eighths of an inch wide and wider that are favored by graffiti "taggers."

But, Daley, who launched a cleanup program Wednesday to remove graffiti and debris from the city's 1,700 viaducts, said, "I would just as soon . . . see a tax on the sale of spray cans."
