Living up to his reputation as North America's best 3-year-old
pacing colt, Beach Towel recorded the fastest mile in Chicago harness
racing history - 1:52 2/5 - Saturday night to win the $347,000
American National Stake at Sportsman's Park.
Beach Towel, driven and trained by Ray Remmen, took the lead at
mid-stretch and closed with a rush to win by 3 1/2 lengths. Beach
Towel, the 1-5 favorite in a field of 11, returned $2.40, $2.20 and
$2.10. It was his seventh victory in eight starts this season.
Camluck charged from eighth to finish second. Third-place
Global Assault stalked pace-setting Bookmaker through early fractions
of :27 4/5, :57 and 1:24 3/5.
