Article: City panel backs spray paint ban

A City Council committee Thursday unanimously endorsed an ordinance that bans the sale of spray paint cans in Chicago.

Proponents urged the ordinance as the "only way" to crack down on graffiti.

Ald. Richard Mell (33rd) and Ald. Edward M. Burke (14th) said they proposed the ban because manufacturers and retailers have failed to cooperate on the problem.

But Mell said he would hold back the ordinance if industry leaders can "show some progress" before the next Council meeting scheduled for Sept. 12.

More than 11,000 cans of spray paint are sold daily in the city, said industry officials testifying Thursday before the Council's Rules Committee.
