Article: CDs' sound is enhanced by surround sound

At last summer's Consumer Electronics Show, I got into a discussion with James Kogen, the president of Shure Brothers, about the potential of surround sound. Shure Brothers makes one of the best surround-sound decoders on the market for home use, and I'm one of surround sound's biggest fans.

Several companies encode surround sound for film and TV productions. The best-known is Dolby Laboratories, but others include "Ultra-Stereo" and Shure Brothers' "Stereo Surround." The Dolby and Ultra-Stereo systems are common to movie theaters, while the Shure system would be most familiar to TV viewers.
