The TV cameras peered through the glass of Roman C. Pucinski's private office, hoping to record a sad face or a tear on this night of his Last Hurrah.

"Grandpa," said one of the alderman's granddaughters, "can I close the drapes?"

Pucinski looked up. He saw the cameras pointed his way. "No!" he said.

The alderman lost his bid for a sixth term Tuesday, but he refused to whine or curse or flee the public eye. In 33 years in politics, he was never known to duck a notebook or camera, and he wasn't about to change his ways now.
