RUNGSTED, Denmark The birthplace of Karen Blixen - better known as
Isak Dinesen, author of Out of Africa and other works - has opened as
a museum.
Queen Margrethe II officially opened the museum May 14 in
Rungsted, an old fishing harbor that has turned into a fashionable
residential area 12 miles north of Copenhagen.
Rungstedlund, the two-wing, white-brick house where Blixen was
born in 1885, had been closed to the public since she died there in
1962 at the age of 77.
However, after the film "Out of Africa," starring Meryl Streep
and Robert Redford, won an Oscar for best picture in 1985, sales of
Blixen's books took off. The royalties enabled the Rungstedlund
