Article: Expatriate Steve Lacy cooks his jazz slowly

ALLENTOWN, Pa. Time and distance. Distance and time.

These two words go a long way toward describing Steve Lacy's music and his life.

Lacy is easily the leading exponent of the soprano saxophone.

But consider distance. While his work usually is called jazz, it has evolved into something beyond the chorus-bridge-improvisation structure that characterizes most of traditional jazz.

And, consider time. It has taken Lacy, an American expatriate now living in Paris, almost 20 years to gain a measure of respect in the United States, where jazz is still considered a specialty music.
