Article: Breast cancer groups unite // Ready to play `hardball' in push for more research

The decade-old breast cancer support group movement is moving beyond handing out educational brochures to lobbying Congress for more funds for research and improved access to treatment for poor women.

"The breast cancer organizations are no longer tea party groups. Our members are angry because of the lack of progress in breast cancer," said Sharon Green, executive director of the Homewood-based Y-ME National Organization for Breast Cancer Information and Support. "We're ready to play hardball politics."

Green and other leaders in the Breast Cancer Coalition, which was formed in January in Washington, last week huddled in Chicago to discuss strategy in mounting their campaign.
