Article: Fermilab collides with 21st century

A newly approved upgrade at Fermilab will ensure the west suburban lab remains the world's premier high-energy physics center in the 1990s.

But after 2000, Fermilab's future is in doubt.

In late 1999, a machine 20 times more powerful than Fermilab, the superconducting super collider, is scheduled to begin running in Texas. If Congress decides it can't afford two world-class atom smashers, Fermilab might have to close.

Losing Fermilab would be a major blow to Illinois' economy and high-tech reputation. Fermilab anchors the west end of the Interstate 88 research corridor. It has a $200 million budget, employs 2,300 people and does business with more than 1,000 Illinois companies.
