INTERNAL UPHEAVAL
No letup: Changes sweeping the Soviet Union continued unabated as
the republic of Byelorussia declared its independence, the republic
of Moldavia prepared to make a similar declaration tomorrow and
Soviet lawmakers were expected to signal an end to claims over the
Baltic states.
Military purge: The new defense minister announced a sweeping purge
of the military high command.
Suicide: Marshal Sergei Akhromeyev, military adviser to President
Mikhail S. Gorbachev and former armed forces chief of staff,
committed suicide. He left a note saying everything he had devoted
his life to building was now collapsing.
