In the winter of 1986, Andre Dawson was so eager to leave Montreal that he signed a blank contract with the Cubs. Since, Dawson has watched as the Expos' problems with money and facilities have mounted.

The team was sold this year and has tried to rebuild on a shoestring budget. Olympic Stadium lost its roof to a thunderstorm and now the stadium has been closed for the season because of structural damage. No free agents want to play in Montreal.
