The work of Phil Spector represents a black and white world.
Spector's wall-of-sound production was an essential component of
the innocent years covered in the "Phil Spector Back to Mono
(1958-1969)" boxed set that will hit the stores on Tuesday.
The wall-of-sound consisted of minimal chord changes that,
contrary to in-your-face connotations, opened the landscape for
layered strings, lavish choral arrangements and lyrics where boys
would be boys and girls were always girls. To put such high drama in
stereo would be the same as colorizing "Dragnet."
