At the turn of the century, many homes had a "parlor," a special living room that was seldom used and often was furnished in Victorian decor, with heavy draperies and upholstered furniture. It sometimes was cordoned off with a posh gold rope. The room was used only on special occasions: for weddings, funerals or entertaining the clergy or other important guests.

Today, the seldom-used room in most homes is the dining room; everyone congregates in the family room. Dining no longer includes good conversation and the interchange of ideas, because the family partakes of their nourishment in front of the TV.
