Article: W. Side man slain trying to help boy

A 29-year-old West Side man trying to help a youth who was being assaulted near a schoolyard Thursday afternoon was shot and killed by the boy's assailants, police said.

Michael Payton, of the 5300 block of West Hirsch, who was shot five times in the torso, was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital.

According to police Sgt. Michael Chasen, Payton was driving near his home around 2:30 p.m. when he saw a group of youths and adults beating a boy near Wright Elementary School, 627 N. Harding.
