CARDONA, Spain The two-lane road through the enchanting green hills
of Catalonia dipped and curved, charted more for the days of a
horse-drawn carriage than for a rickety 20th century bus. The
squeak of the brakes alternated with the grind of the engine as our
driver nonchalantly navigated stomach-churning turns through Spain's
patchwork fields, forested hillsides and dusty villages that stretch
from Barcelona to the French border - once the kingdom of
Charlemagne's nephew, Don Ramon Folch, Duke of Cardona.
The sights and constant noise were hypnotic to an exhausted pair
