When college professor Adolph Reed switched from Yale to Northwestern University last fall, he was "pleasantly surprised" to discover how racially mixed Evanston is.

But Evanston also had some unpleasant surprises for Reed, who is black.

He noticed that, downtown, white women clutched their belongings when they passed him on the street. "I'm 45, hardly a teenager," Reed said.

Even more disturbing was his treatment in the Evanston bank where he has an account. On two occasions, he said, guards were conspicuously shadowing his movements.
