FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. After a half-dozen years of trying, this resort city finally has cast off the shackles of youth.

Ever since 1960, when George Hamilton, Connie Francis and friends hit the silver screen in "Where the Boys Are," the silver sands of this south Florida resort town have been alive to the sounds of hundreds of thousands of high school and college students. They'd arrive every year during spring vacation - all intent on having the times of their young lives.

As spring-break capital, Fort Lauderdale wore its mantle happily at first. The student shenanigans caused cash registers to ring and it wasn't long before the event became a mainstay of the town's economy.
