Like many of today's parents, Charles Myer III, M.D., remembers when "the kid with the runny nose was just a part of childhood."

Not any more, thanks to new technology and the work of Myer and his colleagues in pediatric otolaryngtology - the branch of medicine treating kids' ear, nose and throat troubles.

Nowadays, stopping a chronic runny nose may require one or more antibiotics, treatment for allergies, even delicate endoscopic surgery, said Myer, who is associate professor of otolaryngtology at the University of Cincinnati and a spokesman for the American Academy of Pediatrics.
