HALLANDALE, Fla. Rap entertainer Hammer signed autographs Saturday
while waiting with confidence that his heavy favorite, Dance Floor,
would win the $500,000 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park.
When it was over, those who backed longshot Technology waltzed
to the cashier windows to collect a $26.20 payoff for each $2. Dance
Floor was a tiring second, beaten by 4 1/2 lengths. Pistols and
Roses was a head back in third place, an effort good enough to take
him to the Kentucky Derby.
The crowd of 29,433 saw a great day of racing that was backed
with a state record $6,922,324 on a 12-race program. Wagering at
Sportsman's Park and outlets in Illinois totaled $561,242 on the
Florida Derby, ...
