Article: Dixon's defeat raises prospects for reluctant Williamson

Last year, Kenilworth lawyer Richard S. Williamson flatly rejected an invitation to run for the U.S. Senate.

Williamson, 42, didn't think it was the right time to make his move. He also thought that Sen. Alan J. Dixon (D-Ill.) would be nearly impossible to beat. But when Illinois House Minority Leader Lee A. Daniels and other GOP leaders approached him on the eve of the filing deadline, Williamson gave it more thought. President Bush, Senate Republican Leader Robert J. Dole (R-Kan.), White House Chief of Staff Samuel K. Skinner and Gov. Edgar also urged Williamson to lead the '92 Illinois GOP ticket.
