Article: Con man preys on owners of lost pets

The Anti-Cruelty Society on Monday warned pet owners to beware of a con man who claims to have found their pets and demands $100 to $200 for their return, but fails to deliver after receiving the money.

"It is such a scam," said Jane Stern, a society spokeswoman. "Losing a pet is such an emotional thing for pet owners. Somebody who has lost a pet is willing to talk to anybody to try to get it back.

"We've received reports from seven pet owners in the last month. We know of people who lost between $100 and $200. We know of others, but some are too embarrassed to report it."
