The Brookfield Zoo's baby bottlenose dolphin died Sunday, five
days after birth.
The male calf was the firstborn of 10-year-old Tapeko, who is on
breeding loan from Boston's New England Aquarium.
Newborn dolphin mortality is very high - as much as 57 percent
in the wild - for calves born to inexperienced mothers. No one knows
why, but most firstborn and many second- or third-born calves die,
said Mary Burke, manager of the Seven Seas Dolphinarium.
