Iusually know well in advance when weekend company is expected.
But a few days ago my husband called me with news that an old college
friend, whom we had not seen in more than 20 years, was in town with
his son.
Although I was thrilled at the prospect of seeing them, I didn't
know how I'd find time to plan and cook a good meal on such short
notice - not to mention get the house cleaned. I needed to plan a
simple dinner that included make-ahead dishes or food that needed
