A drying out strip termed "good" after early morning showers
Saturday helped Pine Bluff win the 117th Preakness Stakes.
I've written for years the condition of the strip has probably
more to do with winning a race than anything else. That was born
out when Lil E. Tee, the Kentucky Derby winner, could finish only
fifth in the Preakness.
"He didn't seem to get hold of the strip," said Pat Day, rider
of Lil E. Tee.
Later it was reported that Lil E. Tee bled in the race.
Pine Bluff, who was fifth beaten 5 1/4 lengths in the Derby, ran
the race of his life, covering the 1 316 miles in 1:55 3/5.
Apparently, Casual Lies, second in the Derby, likes any kind of
strip. He was a good third ...
