Article: Mitterrand Vows Aid in Daring Visit To Sarajevo

SARAJEVO President Francois Mitterrand of France paid a gutsy but inconclusive visit to the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina on Sunday in an attempt to open the city's airport and begin the flow of food and medicine to its residents.

Mitterrand, who arrived with armed United Nations peacekeeping forces covering his arrival from the ground, met with Bosnian President Alija Izetbegovic and a Croat leader.

He gave no details of these talks or of a brief meeting with Serb leaders at the Sarajevo airport.

"We are going to send humanitarian aid to the people of Sarajevo, and if necessary it will be protected by force," Mitterrand said as he strolled the streets of Sarajevo.
