The baby had stopped breathing. The baby was gone.
But Art Benker brought her back to life Monday. He did it over
the phone.
It started when Benker, 50, a Chicago Fire Department dispatcher
for 32 years, took the call at his Englewood fire alarm office.
"The baby has stopped breathing! The baby has stopped
breathing!" the caller shouted. "The baby is turning blue!"
The call was from a baby-sitter who had been feeding Kelly
Taylor, age 4 months. The baby had choked. The sitter was
hysterical. She couldn't even give the address, in the 3600 block of
South Leavitt Avenue.
