Article: Fire Dispatcher Saves Baby's Life - by Phone

The baby had stopped breathing. The baby was gone.

But Art Benker brought her back to life Monday. He did it over the phone.

It started when Benker, 50, a Chicago Fire Department dispatcher for 32 years, took the call at his Englewood fire alarm office.

"The baby has stopped breathing! The baby has stopped breathing!" the caller shouted. "The baby is turning blue!"

The call was from a baby-sitter who had been feeding Kelly Taylor, age 4 months. The baby had choked. The sitter was hysterical. She couldn't even give the address, in the 3600 block of South Leavitt Avenue.

But Chicago's 911 system automatically flashes the address of any caller. Benker quickly sent an ambulance and ...
