Article: Cashing In on Fast Start // De Souza Is Men's Winner; Somers Takes Women's Title

Jose Cesar De Souza of Brazil knew Eddy Hellybuyck of Belgium had been hired to set a fast pace Sunday and probably wouldn't finish the 15th Chicago Marathon.

So De Souza, usually a front-runner anyway, kept pace with Hellybuyck while the rest in the field of 8,214 let them go. De Souza's strategy turned out to be the right one because only Hellybuyck provided any competition.

De Souza became the event's second consecutive champion from Brazil. His time of 2 hours, 16 minutes, 14 seconds was 1:16 faster than Hellybuyck's.

"When I warmed up, I felt real good," De Souza said through agent-interpreter Luis Possa. "But I expected to run with a group of people, not be alone."
