Oscar De La Hoya made a triumphant return to boxing tonight,
pummeling Arturo Gatti mercilessly from the start and scoring a fifth-
round technical knockout when Gatti's corner threw in the towel.
De La Hoya, the former world champion in four weight classes,
knocked down Gatti in the first round with a powerful left hook and
then pummeled the ex-junior lightweight champion throughout. Gatti's
trainer, Hector Rocha, jumped onto the ring apron and his manager,
Pat Lynch, threw in the towel to call a halt to the fight.
"He's a tough guy, and I could have done a lot better," De La Hoya
said after raising his record to 33-2 with 27 knockouts. "But I only
had 2 1/4 months training with [Floyd] ...
