Sidney Zwick, the gadfly of Evanston, can't get a good suit in
his hometown anymore.
"We had a lot of fine men's stores at one time," said a wistful
Zwick, who has lived in the north suburb since 1938. "Evanston was
second in sales volume only to State Street before World War II."
But the big, fancy department stores and the smaller,
family-owned specialty shops with their wool pants and cashmere
sweaters have moved away or closed down. Now Evanston is getting a
Sam's Club Warehouse, and Zwick, a frequent critic of new development
and the City Council, is not happy.
"We aren't trying to attract the classy stores," he said. "Now
we're trying to attract the schlock."
