In a suburban power struggle, RTA Chairman Gayle M. Franzen has
decided to challenge Du Page County Board Chairman Aldo E. Botti in
the 1994 Republican primary.
Franzen, a longtime associate of former Gov. James R. Thompson,
will declare his candidacy after the adjournment of the current
legislative session. Illinois Senate President James "Pate" Philip
(R-Wood Dale), chairman of the Du Page Republican organization, is
supporting Franzen over Botti, who is among Philip's more outspoken
critics.
Franzen, who has headed the RTA since 1989, is the former
executive director of the State Toll Highway Authority and also
