Three years ago, filmmaker David Lynch fascinated and befuddled millions of television viewers with the surreal premiere of "Twin Peaks."

Although the two-hour debut episode generated high Nielsen ratings and public interest, the weird weekly program quickly began to lose large portions of its audience as the murder-mystery plot turned into a maze of obtuse digressions. Lynch seemed to lose interest, ABC lost its patience, and the series died with a sigh in June, 1991.

The quirky genre survived, however, spawning the CBS dramas "Northern Exposure" and "Picket Fences."
