Article: Health Panel Urges Halt To Female Circumcision

GENEVA The World Health Organization on Wednesday announced its intention to put an end to female circumcision, an African custom that has maimed an estimated 80 million women.

The UN health agency has long warned that genital mutilation kills tens of thousands of women and condemns millions to a life of agony. But the agency has never taken action at the international level.

The mutilation ranges from cuts in the clitoris to the complete removal of the labia and sewing up most of the vagina.
