For nearly 20 years, Tina Turner stood by her abusive husband
Ike.
"Why?" asks actress Angela Bassett, who portrays the legendary
rock star in the film "What's Love Got to Do With It."
"The relationship with Ike was abusive, bad and all the
adjectives. Tina is so talented, strong and beautiful.
"So why did she stay? That's the big question I had to answer.
Explaining it was one of the film's goals."
Even before she landed the role, Bassett met with Turner, pored
through the singer's photo albums and read her 1986 autobiography I,
Tina, on which "What's Love" is based.
The book tells the story of Anna Mae Bullock (Turner's real
name), who was born in Nutbush, Tenn., in 1939. Anna ...
