Article: Dust-Mite Allergy Shot May Help Asthmatics

A new type of allergy shot may ease or eliminate asthma symptoms in people who are allergic to dust mites, say researchers in Belgium.

Sixty to 90 percent of children and young adults with asthma are allergic to dust mites, microscopic eight-legged creatures that live in house dust and thrive on humidity, according to Dr. Thomas A. W. Platts-Mills, head of the division of asthma and allergic disease at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

Many asthma experts believe the rising worldwide incidence of asthma may be partly due to growing numbers of dust mites as houses are more tightly insulated.
