The Prince William County Service Authority recommended against
building community sewer systems for the third time in less than a
year at a meeting with the Board of County Supervisors last week.
Last April, again in August and again Tuesday night, county
officials warned against the alternative sewer systems because of
environmental, public health and fiscal concerns.
The community systems operate as a shared sewage treatment plant
for a limited number of homes as an alternative to extending county
sewer lines or to individual septic tanks. The community systems have
sparked a debate over growth because they would provide a means to
build in rural lands otherwise unsuited to development.
