Article: South Africa May See Tourism Surge

With South Africa's emergence from decades of apartheid toward a multi-racial government, the beleaguered nation and its neighbors are expected to see a surge in tourism.

"Travelers who have not ventured beyond Kenya in east Africa and Zambia in southern Africa, can now include a complete southern African itinerary to their travel plans," said Mira Berman, executive director of the Africa Travel Association, which promotes travel to the continent.

Although South Africa has experienced an increase in tourism, the region isn't expected to reach its potential as a vacation destination until travelers are certain civil war won't break out in South Africa following April's elections.
