Mircea Bricci's family fled Romania for religious freedom.

But his religious beliefs led to controversy here this month when county officials waged an unsuccessful court fight to force his wife, Tabita, to have a Caesarean section. Doctors feared that the baby she was carrying was being deprived of oxygen.

The Briccis said their religious beliefs prevented them from agreeing to the procedure and, on Wednesday, she gave birth to an apparently healthy baby boy.

Mircea Bricci said Thursday that the birth of his son, Callian, was the end of a long road that started when Callian's grandfather, a successful businessman, fled then-communist Romania for Austria in 1980.
